Privacy Policy

Effective October 5, 2026.

TentSpots is a free website (tentspots.com) and iPhone app for finding camping spots. This page explains what information each of them collects, why, and who else sees it. TentSpots does not sell personal information, does not show advertising, and does not track you across other companies' apps or websites.

The iPhone app

The app has no account, no analytics and no advertising.

  • Location. The app asks for your location only when you tap the location button on the map. It rounds your position to about 1 km before sending it to our server, which uses it to find the spots nearest to you. If you do not share your location, the server estimates your general area from your IP address, using a database on our own server. No other company is involved.
  • Saved on your phone. Spots, photos and maps you open are kept in the app's cache on your phone, so they still work where there is no signal. They stay on your phone. iOS can clear the cache when storage is low, and deleting the app removes it.
  • Reports. Reporting a spot or a review opens your email app with a message to us. We receive only what you choose to send.
  • Directions. Asking for directions passes the spot's location to the map app you pick (Apple Maps, Google Maps or Waze). That app's own privacy policy then applies.

The website

  • Your account. You sign in with Google, with Apple or with a passkey. We keep your email address, your name and profile picture, the account identifier Google or Apple gives us, the public part of any passkey you register (the private key never leaves your device), and your open sign-in sessions.
  • What you post. Spots, reviews, photos, 360° photos and videos you add are public, together with your profile name, and appear on the website and in the app.
  • Location. If you use the “my location” button, your browser gives the map your position so it can move there. The map then asks our server for the spots in the area on screen.
  • Analytics. We use PostHog to understand how the website is used: the pages you view, the buttons you press, how fast pages load, and errors. When you are signed in, this is linked to your account, including your email address and name. PostHog stores this data in the United States.
  • Maps. The website's map is Google Maps, so Google receives your IP address and the map areas you load.

Server logs and errors

Like most web services, our server records each request it receives, including your IP address, the address requested and the time. We use these logs to keep the service secure and to fix problems. Errors on our server are reported to PostHog, with the kind of request that failed and, if you are signed in, your account.

Cookies

The website sets a cookie to keep you signed in. PostHog uses a cookie and your browser's local storage to recognise a returning visitor. Google sets its own cookies when the map or Google sign-in loads. The iPhone app does not use cookies.

Who else processes your information

  • Vercel hosts the website.
  • Our hosting provider runs the server that stores spots, accounts and media.
  • PostHog provides website analytics and error reports.
  • Google provides the website's map and Google sign-in.
  • Apple provides the app's map and Sign in with Apple.

We share information with these companies only so they can provide these services to us. We also disclose information if the law requires it.

How long we keep it

We keep your account information while your account exists, and what you post until it or your account is deleted. We keep server logs and analytics only as long as we need them for the purposes above.

Your choices

To see, correct or delete the information we hold about you, or to delete your account, email support@tentspots.com from the address you sign in with. You can switch off location access for the app at any time in the iPhone's Settings.

Children

TentSpots is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has given us personal information, contact us and we will delete it.
