Huge campground near Portland. Quite an open space, but also half the spots are cozy against the forest
Dairy Creek is the campground at L.L. “Stub” Stewart State Park, in the Coast Range foothills 51 minutes west of Portland. It is open all year: 78 paved RV sites with full hookups and twelve walk-in tent sites, in two loops, with 15 cabins and a hike-in camp elsewhere in the park, and miles of trails for bikes, horses and feet.
As our note says, half the sites are cozy against the forest and half sit out in the open. West Loop (2 to 53) mostly backs onto the trees and holds the walk-in tent sites, 18 to 29; East Loop (60 to 94) opens onto a meadow and has the playground.

- Twelve walk-in tent sites, 18 to 29 on the West Loop, with parking and water nearby. The Brooke Creek hike-in camp, a short walk away, has 21 more in season.

- Fifteen miles of mountain-bike trails, two disc golf courses on the hill, and the paved 21-mile Banks–Vernonia State Trail, which runs through the park.
- Who was Stub Stewart?
- Loran L. “Stub” Stewart served nearly 40 years on Oregon’s parks committee and commission. The park opened in 2007 and carries his name.
