Dispersed camping on the Sandy River near McNeil

On August 1, 2019, the same day we photographed McNeil Campground site by site, we walked the river around it and pinned the places people pitch a tent outside the campground: sandy flats on the bank, clearings under the firs, most with a ring of river rocks for a fire. These are the 89 we photographed, most of them in 360°.

They cost nothing, and there is nothing there: no toilet, no water, no table, no fire ring but the rocks someone left. Fifty-nine of them are within 500 feet of the river; the rest are up the forest roads, in the trees.

Off Forest Road 1825-043 33

A spur road down toward the river. The most spots, from open sand a hundred feet from the water to clearings in the trees.

Along Muddy Fork Road (FR 1825) 27

The road past McNeil toward the Ramona Falls trailhead. Several spots sit right on the bank.

Along East Lolo Pass Road (FR 18) 14

The main road up from Zigzag. Mostly clearings in the trees, a few on the sand.

Around the Ramona Falls trailhead 9

Sandy flats by the trailhead at the end of FR 1825, where the river is, as our note says, quite raw and mountainous. The Forest Service does not say whether you may camp at the trailhead itself, and dispersed camping is not allowed inside developed recreation sites, so camp away from the parking area. The road in is rough; the Forest Service recommends high clearance.

Up the other forest roads 6

Further from the river, in the trees.
