Walk-in tent sites

Some tent sites are kept apart from the cars: you park, and carry the tent the last stretch. These are those sites in our guides, every one with our photo of it, nearest Portland first.

The walk is a gravel path at Dairy Creek, a bridge and a path through the ferns at Lake Quinault, and from the trailhead at Devils Lake.

Dairy Creek Campground 12

Twelve walk-in tent sites on the West Loop at L.L. Stub Stewart State Park, 51 minutes west of Portland, with parking and water nearby. Open all year; book up to six months ahead. In our photos each is a gravel path to a framed tent pad.

Lost Creek Campground 4

Five walk-to sites a short way off the loop, B1 to B5, under tall firs beside a clear creek a mile and a half from McNeil, an hour and a half from Portland. At Recreation.gov; in 2026, open May 22 to September 30.

Falls Creek Campground, Lake Quinault 9

Nine walk-ins on the far side of Falls Creek at Lake Quinault, in the Olympic rain forest, reached by a bridge: you carry your gear in along a path through the ferns. About four hours from Portland. Reservations at Recreation.gov; a reserved site must be taken within 24 hours.

Devils Lake Campground 11

Ten hike-in, tent-only sites, the Forest Service says (eleven are numbered on our map), on a small green lake below South Sister, 50 minutes from Bend and under five hours from Portland. You park at the South Sister / Devils Lake trailhead and walk in; camp only in the designated sites.

From each campground's guide, where the sources are; what is said under a photo is what the photo shows, and nothing more. Checked October 2026.
